A few weeks ago, during a weekend visit to Valencia, my boyfriend and I found a box next to a garbage bin with various things in it. I’d like to add that the things inside were clean, tidily arranged and some of them an absolute treasure. We took some of them (not all, unfortunately… my boyfriend reminds me of this popular tv show when he starts to think I’m hoarding) and, among the taken, there was this book:

I briefly leafed through it and thought it was great. At home I realised it was so much more than great: it was a real, pirate-style treasure. It’s called “Histoire Naturelle Illustrée des Animaux du Monde”, by Philippe Hettinger and was published in 1907. NineteenSEVEN! The most spectacular aspect of the book isn’t the language, or the coloured illustrations, or the information of more than one hundred years ago, or the different point of view, but the two pop-up dissected animals (yes, you read that well) in the front and back cover. As you can see below I took photos of the snail; the pigeon is a bit more delicate and I decided not to open and close it a hundred times to take photos but to leave it be. Incredible idea, and incredibly well done! Below (under the Italian translation) are some of the best parts.

Un paio di settimane fa, durante una breve visita a Valencia, il mio ragazzo ed io abbiamo trovato una scatola di fianco ad un bidone con dentro cose varie. Vorrei specificare che le cose dentro la scatola erano pulite e messe in maniera ordinata, come se il qualcuno che le aveva messe lì avesse voluto che due qualcuni come noi le vedesse e portasse a casa. Cosa che due persone come noi non potevano non fare… Abbiamo portato a casa alcuni oggetti della scatola (non tutti, sfortunatamente, perché quando inizio ad accumulare il mio ragazzo canta la sigla di questa famosa serie tv e smetto..) e, tra i prescelti, c’era questo:

Sul posto l’ho brevemente sfogliato e ho pensato fosse bello. Una volta a casa mi sono accorta che era molto più che bello: era stupendo, fantastico, un vero e proprio tesoro di tipo piratesco. Si chiama “Histoire Naturelle Illustrée des Animaux du Monde”, di Philippe Hettinger ed è stato pubblicato nel 1907. MillenovecentoSETTE! La cosa più spettacolare dell’intero libro non è solo il linguaggio, le informazioni dell’epoca, la visione diversa, le tavole a colori coperte di carta velina, ma sono i due animali pop-up in dissezione (si, avete letto bene.) all’interno della copertina (frontale e retro).

Come potete vedere ho fatto foto solamente alla lumaca: il piccione è in peggior stato e ho preferito non scombussolarlo per fare foto. Bellissima idea e fatta benissimo! Qui sotto alcuni delle parti migliori del libro.
